Smoky Mountains National Park: Opening Back Up!

The Mountains Are Opening Back Up? But Where And What Exactly?

We\’ve all been stuck at home for a while now. So even hearing that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park around Gatlinburg is reopening is enough to bring a sigh of relief!

Just yesterday the Great Smoky Mountains National Park just put out new information regarding road and trail openings. We\’ve included a full copy of the document below as well as a link to their website for further clarification.

Roads and Hiking Trails Reopen

Many of America\’s favorite trails and roads are reopening as of today, Friday May 8th, 2020! Whether you just want to get out of the house for a drive or social distance in the woods, you\’ll now get your chance!

Popular destinations in the Smokies that are reopening include the Cades Cove Loop, Newfound Gap Road across to Cherokee, as well as Cherokee Orchard Road.

Some hiking trails worth mentioning that are not reopening either due to road access or due to the closeness of the trails include Clingman\’s Dome, Alum Cave, and Laurel Falls. Many are high traffic trails during the warm Spring, Summer, and Fall months.

Back Country Campsites and Campgrounds Remain Closed

At this time all the back country camp sites remain closed. Some limited permitting does seem to be allowed so you should check with the Sugarland Visitors Center to learn more.

Practice Safe Social Distancing On Trails

The NPS is asking that everyone use common sense and continue to follow CDC guidelines regarding social distancing while in the Park.
