Cades Cove, one of the most visited places in the Smokies, just announced vehicle-free Wednesdays beginning June 17th, 2020.
One of the most serene places in town is about to become even quieter and peaceful! Many people already knew that you could only visit Cades Cove by bicycle or on foot Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
After extensive planning and surveying, Park officials will begin a “car free” Wednesday program in Cades Cove. For many years bikers and walkers could only enjoy the peace and quiet of the cove Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Now, each Wednesday the entire Cades Cove Loop will be 100% vehicle free and only open for bicycles and pedestrians.
What about Saturdays?
Actually, that’s a fantastic question! First, Cades Cove will begin the vehicle free plan on Wednesdays beginning June 17th, 2020. Then they plan to begin allowing vehicles to enter into Cades Cove all day on Saturdays!
Why is that good news?
If you’ve ever been to Cades Cove on a Saturday you will understand! Moreover, due to the Cove being closed to vehicles until after 10am the car line to get in would back up for miles and miles. For instance, now that cars are allowed in all day on Saturdays the traffic should spread out and give everyone more time to enjoy the area.
Does the plan differ depending upon the time of year?
Yes! During the months of October – April vehicle access will be provided 7 days a week. However, it’s only a trail period for June – September that the Cove will be closed to vehicle access on Wednesdays weekly.
